The seemingly bottomless well of Tims Slightly Used Vehicle Emporium produced this interesting lorry:
The figures are very obviously Airfix, but the lorry itself is a conversion/scratch build. It doesn't look like any type I recognise, but some of the parts look vaguely familiar....
And a look underneath reveals the chassis of an Airfix Quad! The body has been hacked around to produce an open backed and open cab lorry instead.
Based on the old adage 'you can never have too many lorries', I thought this would be a useful addition to the softskin fleet. I tried to lever out the drivers to replace them with 15mm ones. I managed to get the left hand one out (although the entire seat came with him) but the right hand one seemed stuck solid, sitting in a bath of plastic cement. Well he is about the same size as a later cast Peter Pig driver (the co-driver was much bigger), so he will do.
I didn't need to do any more surgery, so I just painted it my standard generic brown/green scheme for nondescript British lorries.
It actually doesn't look too bad in its new paint job. It got a very light drybrush too.
You can see more clearly in the truck bed where the outline of the pod 25pdr Quad kit wheel arch is. The original modeller has obviously just chopped up the entire kit. I have grown to like open backed lorries as I can put troops or cargo in the back to indicate their function, even if they consume a lot more paint to do the deck and inner sides.
Righto, another useful addition and into the truck box it goes.

ReplyDeleteI concur: one can never have too many lorries. And a lorry is a lorry...
Had the driver been too big-headed, you probably could have masked him with a canvas tilt over the cab...
Cheers,
Ion
Ooh, I didn't think of that, good idea. In fact he looks OK next to my 15mm stuff as he is one of the smaller headed Airfix figures, unlike the co-driver.
DeleteCertainly looked like it had been in a war at Tim's. Very useful, though.
ReplyDeleteYes, I think a grizzled veteran of the war! It has already been assigned as a Corps transport unit in my forthcoming Operation Battleaxe game. As I can stuff a load of oil drums in the back.
