Sheffield CALF 2024

Tim recently organised a one day CALF in Sheffield. As the Conference of Wargamers (or COW) is a full weekend, one day events with a similar format are usually referred to as CALF. This was a pretty bijou event with 25 attendees, in the grand surroundings of Tapton Hall.

We had the usual COW style session sign in sheet. There was a plenary session, then three other sessions through the day, each with three games running in parallel, so quite a packed programme for the attendees. Apart from the plenary, each game organiser provided a sign up sheet.

The main conference room where the plenary (and my) session took place.

One of the other rooms (yes, it is a Masonic Hall) with the Bring n' Buy packed with high quality merchandise.

And the third.

Scrum around the signing in board.

The plenary session featured a team presentation about Lambert Simnels rebellion in 1487 and its relationship with the wars of the Roses.

The climactic battle at Stoke Field in Nottinghamshire was illustrated both by slides and with a big heap of toy soldiers on a table. This battle was notable, among other things, for the complete destruction of Martin Schwartz's Landschnekte, in the hire of Mary of Burgundy. Martin Schwartz is something of a folk hero in Germany and a monument to him was erected here in the nineteenth century.

I ran a session in the morning - One Hour WW2, this time a re-run of the Brochow 1939 scenario which I'd previously run remotely.

We were flying abroad that evening so I couldn't stay for the afternoon session, but it was a thoroughly enjoyable morning and many thanks to Tim for organising it.
